Sneaky Greens {green smoothie}

There are so many green smoothies out there. Infinite combinations, each with a myriad of health benefits. Here are some simple guidelines that will help you to throw together a smoothie that your kids will love. Lets start with the basics

Pick your liquid. This will vary based on your child's age. Lactose intolerant / haven't introduced cow's milk yet? Coconut milk, almond milk, or water are good choices. Coconut milk, goat milk yogurt, and whole milk all add a ton of healthy fats, perfect for your baby's growing brain. Pick something that works for your family and measure out about a cups worth for the smoothie

Next, pick your fruit. I typically add 1-2 bananas, frozen gives the smoothie a thicker consistency, and about 1.5 cups of mixed frozen/fresh fruit. Whatever I have on hand. Ice cubes are optional but I always add 4-6, especially if my bananas are fresh, just to make the smoothie a little colder

On to the star of the show: the greens. Spinach and swiss chard are great options for greens in your smoothie, especially if you are making it for your child. They both blend very easily and have mild tastes. Often times if I have it on hand I add a leaf, maybe two, of kale. Kale can be very bitter so make sure to add less rather than more when in doubt. My little guy is very particular when it comes to green smoothies and won't drink it if it tastes too much like veggies. You can leave the stems on the chard but kale stems are much more fibrous so make sure to separate the leaf from the stem before blending.

Layer your ingredients in your blender. I usually do liquid, bananas, fruit {blend} then add the greens {blend} and finally the ice and blend again. My little guy loves sucking his up through a colorful straw. There are so many ways you can customize this smoothie to add in even more nutrients for your little one: avocado, Almond/peanut/sunflower seed butter, hemp/chia/flax, shredded coconut/coconut butter, etc. Play around with it to find your favorite combination!
